We've been working with other councils and the New Zealand Transport Agency to develop a regional ring road around the city. This also includes an additional road bridge across the river.

This project is dependent on NZTA funding. Council is seeking commitment from NZTA as to the exact route that a regional ring road will follow and which parts should be the responsibility of NZTA as a state highway.

NZTA is also considering options to replace the Gorge route. A decision is due in early-2018. We've dedicated over $10m in this 10 Year Plan for strategic roading links, including safety improvements to the intersection of Longburn-Rongotea Road and Number 1 Line (2019-23) and Kairanga-Bunnythorpe Road (Mangaone Stream and Jacks Creek) bridge renewal (2020-23).

We'll review this once NZTA has chosen the preferred option for the Gorge, to ensure we take a strategic and consistent approach.

Update: NZTA has announced its preferred option for the Gorge road replacement. It has also said it will bring forward work on a detailed business case for the regional ring road, including a second bridge across the Manawatū River. We will work with NZTA to develop this.

Our 10 Year Plan consultation process has now closed. Thanks to everyone who has provided us with feedback on our projects and the options we laid out for them.

We will be finalising the 10 Year Plan based on this feedback in June and will confirm the option chosen once this is complete.
